ABOUT US!

Why Do We Do What We Do at UPLIFT?
Instead of the traditional vision, mission, and objectives, we pose a simple yet meaningful question:

What are the barriers for vulnerable and marginalized youth to gain the knowledge, skills, and experience needed for their first professional paid job that respects their dignity, and what exactly, no matter how small, can we do about it?

Many assume that in this age of the World Wide Web, digital technology, and AI, youth can easily learn everything they need via computers and mobile devices as long as they have internet access. Countless online training programs and guidebooks are available to learn virtually anything. However, while this is true for those in urban, digitally connected communities with a certain level of formal and informal education, digital literacy, and English proficiency, it is not the case for millions of youths living in poverty, remote, isolated, and conflict-affected regions. These youths have very limited formal and informal education, may not speak English well enough to acquire new knowledge and skills, lack the financial means to travel for training, and have no social connections to get started. Simply put, what they know and have is insufficient to secure a dignified job, and they are in an endless cycle of poverty with no end in sight. They are often overlooked by many beneficial projects and important actors, including government institutions, civil society organizations, NGOs, donors, and entrepreneurs.

Our Unique Perspective

At Uplift, many of us come from these environments—remote, isolated, and conflict-affected areas riddled with poverty, drug abuse, human trafficking, gang violence, and crime. By sheer luck, some of us managed to escape these environments, receive a good education that taught us to think critically, and land jobs in both the private and non-profit sectors. We have firsthand experience of the needs and sufferings of vulnerable and marginalized communities because we used to be—and still are—one of them. More importantly, we know how to empower them because there were key individuals and institutions who uplifted and helped us escape poverty, and now it is our turn to do the same.

Our Team

The Uplift Strategic Management Team consists of individuals educated in the West—in America and Europe. We have worked in local and international organizations, both in the private and non-profit sectors, lived, and traveled extensively in several countries, and possess diverse work and education experiences ranging from tourism and business consulting to
international development and civic engagement.
