Strategic Communication
“In spite of this age of the Internet, the World Wide Web, and digital everything, never has the need for excellence in written communications been greater. Never have effective writing skills been more in demand in business, education, or government. The trend towards downsizing, outsourcing, rationalization, and especially self-employment these days means that people who never thought of themselves as writers must now take on that task, along with all their other responsibilities. The expression of ideas, events, procedures, problems, expectations, requests, explanations, proposals, and the like has to be so clear that your reader will not only understand but also be inspired to respond in the desired manner.”
— Timothy R. V. Foster
We couldn’t agree more with Timothy R. V. Foster, an excellent author on Business Writing. At Uplift, we will train you on how to write and speak clearly, both in plain English and plain Burmese. You’ll learn to express ideas, events, procedures, problems, expectations, requests, explanations, and proposals—everything you need—clearly, effectively, and efficiently. From our decades of professional experience in both private and non-profit sectors, we’ve learned that most people struggle to communicate clearly and strategically. Simply speaking or writing a language as your mother tongue does not guarantee proficiency in these critical skills. In the first component of the Uplift Job-readiness Program, we train vulnerable and marginalized youths to become effective writers and speakers—a key skill required regardless of where you work.
Basic Informational Technology Skills
We believe in harnessing innovative technological resources to enhance writing and presentation effectiveness. However, we recognize the disparity in access to these resources, particularly among marginalized and vulnerable populations. At Uplift, we advocate for the Microsoft Office Suite due to its capacity to streamline tasks. Indeed, Microsoft 365 products are widely utilized across industries. While we may not offer training on advanced technological tools, we provide comprehensive instruction in Microsoft Office skills such as Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. Amidst countless training options available, we find Kyle Pew, a Microsoft Certified Trainer with over 1 million students trained worldwide through his Udemy courses, to be exceptionally effective. We have attended Kyle Pew’s training ourselves and are preparing to achieve Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certification in the near future.
“Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) is an industry-recognized certification program validating skills in Microsoft Office applications. With over 3.9 million jobs annually in the United States alone requesting Microsoft Office skills, MOS-certified individuals stand out in the competitive job market, simplifying daily tasks and fostering career growth.”
— Certiport
While many industries demand skills beyond Microsoft Office, these foundational skills are invaluable for your first entry-level professional job. They serve as a solid base for mastering more advanced software relevant to your field of interest. Surprisingly, many individuals lack proper training in Microsoft Office skills, assuming these skills are universally acquired—a misconception. You might find that your peers, colleagues, or even supervisors are not proficient in Microsoft Office, let alone certified specialists. You can distinguish yourself by mastering these skills and confidently applying them in your first professional role.
Civic Engagement
Our job-readiness program includes a third component focused on civic engagement. However, due to current funding limitations, we are still finalizing the curriculum for this part. We will update this page as we integrate civic engagement into our job-readiness program.
